‘Everyone else attended some secret lesson–‘
Opening Reception, sponsored by Four Pillars Gin and Sample Brew: 08.11.18, 6-9 p.m
Created by James Whiting over the course of 2018, ‘Everyone else attended some secret lesson–‘ pokes and prods a foundation of anthropological and social theory to explore the influence that visual materials have upon our understanding of intimacy and its communication through gesture.
Drawing upon imagery from both family photographs and popular western film, as well as presenting images and installation constructed by the artist, the work presents a space that questions how this language may be personally acquired and defined. It unveils how trends within the information we receive shape expectations of our own experience, and how we perceive our ability to express ourselves to those around us.
Awash with curious uncertainty, perhaps most central to the work are the questions of how we feel in the space between knowing what must be expressed and if that can be fulfilled. Where within our reach does this tension reside? How can we learn to receive and emit these actions, if we can at all?
James Whiting and 222 Rosslyn would like to acknowledge that this event, as well as the creation of the work, takes place on stolen Indigenous land. We pay respect to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, past and emerging, as the custodians of the land on which we work.
