Everyone else attended some secret lesson in which how to live was taught and you had a dental appointment that day or you were somehow not invited.
Solo Exhibition - James Whiting
Opening Reception 08.11.2018, 6-9 pm.
Exhibit open 06.11.2018 - 10.11.2018.
Created by James Whiting over the course of 2018, “Some secret lesson…” pokes and prods at the foundation of anthropological and social theory to explore the influence of visual materials on our understanding of intimacy and its communication through gesture.
Drawing upon imagery from both family photographs and popular Western films, as well as presenting images and an installation constructed by the artist, the work unveils how trends in the information we receive shape the expectations of our own experience and the way we perceive our ability to express ourselves to those around us.
Awash with curious uncertainty, perhaps most central to the work are the questions of how we feel in the space between knowing what must be expressed, and if that can be fulfilled. Where, within our reach, does this tension reside?
James Whiting and 222 Rosslyn would like to acknowledge that this event, as well as the creation of the work, takes place on stolen Indigenous land. We pay respect to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, past and emerging, as the custodians of the land on which we work.
